How can environmental problems be assessed? How do companies and organisations work to prevent and solve environmental problems? How is control exercised over companies and individuals by public authorities?

From a fundamentally practical standpoint, in that change starts in the reality of today, our students are challenged to de­velop professional skills, knowledge and networks in close collaboration with the surrounding society.

The interdisciplinary Masters programme in Environmental Man­agement and Policy aims to prepare students for a career in or with industry and public authorities. Subjects such as organisation and gov­ernance of companies, technical systems in companies and in society, environmental economics, environmental law, environmental policy and sustainable consumption are integrated. The programme is based on the focus on indus­try/organisations and policy/public authorities.

The dual focus of the programme, on management and policy, means that we are able to train future decision makers in environmental policy that have a good understanding of the realities of environmental management in business, as well as future decision makers in corporate environmental management that have a good understanding of environmental policy. Increasingly we find that many alumni, regardless of their employer, work in the intersection of public policy and corporate management to move the environmental agenda further.

Courses/programme structure

The programme is composed of four blocks. Although the course curriculum is fixed, (there are no elective courses), the nature of several course components allows for a great deal of individual customisation. Studies are intense and include lectures, seminars, excursions, study visits, group projects, and individual assignments.

Introductory block (30 credits):

The courses in the introductory block provide essentials for the coming parts of the programme and cover fundamentals of environmental science, business management, economics and technical systems.

In the Advanced block (30 credits) and Applied block (30 credits)

our emphasis turns to looking at solutions and the role of different actors in shaping and implementing sustainability solutions. During these semesters practitioners, alumni included, have an important role in the teaching. Two courses involve group work with real world clients (the first course focuses on business, and the second on policy organisations) where students provide input on real challenges that the client is grappling with.

Master’s thesis block (30 credits)

The programme opens the door to a wide range of careers in all spheres essential for real advancement of the environmental agenda. Our alumni work in industry, consultancy, government agencies, EU bodies, international organisations, environmental organsiations and academia.
